Foreword
by
Chief Olusegun Obasanjo
President, Federal Republic of Nigeria
I am committed in my belief to seeing
Nigeria move forward as one united, democratic, indissoluble entity
in peace and stability; and any attempt in similar direction is
always dear to my heart.
This book represents an excellent and invaluable research that can
be a document viable for not only in our time but for posterity.
As one who has been involved in inter-ethnic marriage, an experience
which over the years, can be described as beneficial, I cannot but
recognize this noble attempt that serves as an eye opener for many.
I
see in this book a great and urgent need to ensure that Nigerians,
and indeed, Africans and the world at large are given the desired
information, knowledge and exposure that will guarantee their future,
and effectively project their fatherland in more positive light.
The
inability of our elites to open their eyes and minds, look beyond
their fixed narrow cultural enclaves and maximize the opportunity
and benefits of inter-ethnic marriage is no doubt a factor endangering
our polity; moreover, our refusal to embrace it portends a major
threat to national unity.
The
Nigerian system has norms that alter dramatically the natural family
cohesion, but empirical evidence suggests that the long-established
and natural institutions of inter-ethnic marriage and family are
necessary to the unity, political and social health of all in the
society and thus, the nation in general.
It
is in appreciation of this foresight and dedication to our values
by the author that I wholeheartedly accept to identify with this
academic and cultural excursion and discourse and therefore, commend
the initiative. I am certain that the data, analyses, interpretations,
conclusion and prescriptions in this volume will encourage future
research and policy as well as academic dabates.
I
find the research of high academic value and a good reference point
for all well-meaning individuals and different institutions of learning
and hope it will be embraced as such.
